Winter Moccasins

These winter moccasins were exchanged and collected in 1968 from Wisconsin. The moccasins are made of buffalo hide which is a soft tan color. Moccasins for the winter could also be made from elk and deer. On the inside there are stuffed leaves possibly used for warmth.

The moccasins themselves are 28 centimeters long and 22 centimeters from the bottom up. The moccasin size would be 7-8 for a man and a 9-10 shoe size for a woman. Most moccasins in the Great Lakes region were made to fit the environment. There is patching on the sole to keep it sturdy for their harsh winter conditions. The way these moccasins are made is good for walking on ice, snow, and rocks.
